Sam Anderson discusses his book, "Boom City", at Politics and Prose on 8/31/18.

Oklahoma City’s recent history has been marked by both the national tragedy of the 1995 Murrah building bombing and the inspiring near-triumph of the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team in the  2012-’13 season. As Anderson shows in his lively social history, the town has been a fascinating place right from its first, chaotic moment, when thousands of people rushed to stake their claims in a “Land Run” in 1889. Writing with the wit, insight, and narrative verve that have won him legions of readers, Anderson, critic-at-large for the New York Times Magazine, chronicles Oklahoma City’s fast growth, its dreams, hopes, and occasional bad luck, and profiles the colorful figures who’ve helped make it what it is, from Sam Draper, OKC’s version of Robert Moses, to Flaming Lips front man Wayne Coyne and the Thunder general manager, Sam Presti. Anderson is in conversation with Kathryn Schulz, a New Yorker staff writer.
