Almost two months after violence first erupted at a rally called by a tribal student body in the Churachandpur district of Manipur, locals on Saturday came together to mourn and commemorate Kuki-Zo tribals who have died in the ethnic conflict in Manipur at a silent protest. A key feature of the protest was a hundred coffins, carried by rallygoers to represent the more than 100 people killed so far.

Thousands of participants silently marched from the District Hospital morgue to Peace Ground in Tuibong near Churachandpur's mini secretariat, a distance of 3 kilometres, wearing black clothes.

Every village located along the route gave a gun salute to the deceased with single-barrel guns.

The dummy coffins were placed at a protest site built near the mini secretariat.

After the march, representatives of a joint women's body and family members of the deceased placed wreaths on the coffins.

An opening speech and prayer were conducted by Reverend S. Vunminthang, following which lament songs were sung by the elderly.

The protesters reiterated their demand for a separate administration in view of the ongoing ethnic clashes.
