It is a world unique, which we associate mainly with the Spartakiada or the concerts of musical greats such as the Rolling Stones or Michael Jackson in the 1990s. Today, the gigantic structure of Strahov Stadium is slowly falling into disrepair. But we went inside with our camera to see what it looks like!

The Strahov Stadium, which is still the largest in the world and could hold up to 250,000 people, began construction in 1925 and opened its doors to visitors of the All-Sokol Meeting after just one year. At that time, the wooden stands could accommodate an unprecedented 140,000 spectators, including the then President T. G. Masaryk.

From the 1950s until the Revolution, Strahov Stadium was known mainly for the monstrous and propagandistic Spartakiada. Prominent spectators could watch it from the west stand, which offered the best views and contained a surprisingly austere presidential lounge. Ordinary visitors then took their seats in the south stand. Above it you will also find the greenhouse, which served mainly as a centre for journalists.

With the onset of the 1990s, Strahov Stadium slowly began to lose its lustre - although it welcomed celebrities such as Pope John Paul II, the Roaring Stones and Michael Jackson, it lost its main use. Today, this colossus is rapidly deteriorating and the question arises what to do with it in the future. The latest plans of the Prague City Council talk about the creation of a technology and innovation centre, which should operate in cooperation with the ČVUT.

And how do you see the future of Stadion Strahov? In your opinion, should it be preserved or would you imagine another project in its place? Let us know in the comments. And if you'd like to visit the stadium, check out the website of Open House Prague, an organisation that organises guided tours.
