Early records indicate that Jefferson was founded around 1841. At that time there was a naturally formed log jam on the Red River that raised the water level of Caddo Lake and in turn the Big Cypress Bayou. This water level allowed for larger boats to navigate the Bayou to transport cotton from and other things to Jefferson. n 1873, using nitroglycerin, the Army Corps of Engineers was finally able to clear the raft from the Red River, which spelled the end of big commerce for Jefferson. But this little town has persevered come along as we explore Jefferson, TX.
