Fun Inertia Lab: Stacking Pennies and Newton's First Law!

Description: 🔍 Dive into the fascinating world of physics with our exciting Inertia Lab! In this hands-on experiment, students explore Newton's First Law in a fun and engaging way. 🚀

🤔 Objective: Stack 10 pennies on top of each other, place a card on top, and then add 5 more pennies directly over the 10 pennies. Can you flick the card and keep the pennies from moving? Let's put Newton's First Law to the test!

🔬 What You'll Need:
15 pennies
A sturdy card

👩‍🔬 Procedure:
Begin by stacking 10 pennies in a vertical column.
Carefully place the card on top of the 10 pennies.
Add 5 more pennies on top of the card, directly above the stack.
Now, give the card a gentle flick to see if you can prevent the pennies from moving.

🤯 Why Does It Work? Newton's First Law states that an object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by a net external force. In this case, the inertia of the bottom 10 pennies resists any change in their state of motion when the card is flicked. It's a captivating way to witness the principles of physics in action!

🎓 Educational Takeaway: Through this experiment, students not only have a blast but also gain a deeper understanding of Newton's First Law. Discuss the concept of inertia and how it applies to everyday objects, fostering a love for physics in a hands-on and memorable way.
