I was in need of a specific length & head screw, and I needed it to be self-tapping since I wasn't able to drill a pilot hole in the solid wood of my project. We could also call this self drilling screw. By notching the end at an angle, and by make the tip flat, the screw now acts as a (horrible) drill bit. Wood is now drilled away instead of pushed around the screw, thus preventing a split.

*Why not just pre-drill a hole? In my case I needed to screw a small wooden box to a stud, making the screw drive at an angle. That would had required a 6"+ drill bit (of a small 3/16" diameter) so my drill chuck doesn't collide with the box's edge. Such small AND long drill aren't common. A long screwdriver bit is far more common and usually part of anyone's toolbox.*
