The CAC Boomerang was Australia’s first fully designed and produced fighter aircraft, developed during World War II as an emergency measure when the country faced the threat of Japanese invasion. Designed and built by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation, the Boomerang was based on the earlier CAC Wirraway trainer but was heavily modified to serve as a fighter. Although it was slower and less capable in air-to-air combat than other contemporary fighters, it excelled in close air support roles due to its robust construction, excellent maneuverability at low altitudes, and heavy armament, which included 20mm cannons and machine guns. The Boomerang saw significant action in the Pacific, particularly in the jungles of New Guinea, where it was used effectively in ground attack and reconnaissance missions.
