Maybe I can't shake it this time
I sleep with my head under the water, because I'm scared of what I'll find
I had a life I left behind
I cut my hair with a kitchen knife, I think about it every night
It follows me home & waits under the street light
In the shadows I can see the others hide

Maybe I should go outside
The sun is out but it's not too hot & the air feels nice
I could walk down the block
& see the lovers in the park, on their blankets, with their shoes off
They are young, they're not afraid
Or if they are they're just not showing it today

Maybe I should write that letter
To my friend out in California, it's been a while since I heard from her
She's been looking for a job
She's been down on her luck, I hope she's not taking it too hard
You know I wish I could be there with her
& walk Mission Street or Divisadero

Maybe it's not all gloom
My sister's daughter is in the backyard, she just turned two
I can hear them laugh
Taking cover behind each other from the sprinkler's pass
Life is simple in these moments
But sometimes that can be so hard just to notice

Maybe we're going to be okay
I'm getting older, hopefully wiser, hopefully kinder each day
Time is a foe that you can't fight
But you can take her by the hand & you can dance through the night
