In 2008, hedge fund manager Kevin Garner loses his job and nearly relapses into alcoholism until he meets Molly, whom he marries. Years later, they become estranged after their son's disappearance, and Kevin's dissatisfaction grows. After a car accident, a mysterious figure called "The Benefactor" tells Kevin he's in a parallel universe and offers him a deal to become a "shifter," transferring people between realities. Kevin realizes the Benefactor is Satan and refuses, leading to a dystopian life where he clandestinely spreads Biblical passages. Discovering Molly's happier alternate self, Kevin tries to confront the Benefactor but ultimately sacrifices his chance to be with Molly to save another person's sanity. In the end, Kevin finds himself in a new universe where he and Molly reconnect and start a new family, finding peace despite the altered reality.
