Kiyomizu-dera Temple, popularly known as "Hoshina no Kannon-san" or "Botan no Temple", belongs to the Chizan sect of Shingon Buddhism and originated in Tenpei 14 (742 AD). Although it was hit by a great fire in the 5th year of the Taisho era, important cultural properties such as the "iron hoe shape" said to be the oldest in Japan delivered by Sakaue Tamura Maro, the Ryokai Mandala map, and the standing statue of Saint Kannon Bodhisattva are preserved. It is also one of the 33rd and 16th temples of Shinano.
Around November 20th, more than 100 Japanese maples decorate the precincts in bright red.
