Investigators suspect a migrant who died after a fall from a freight train in Whatcom County was being smuggled into the country illegally.

According to Homeland Security Investigations, a migrant walked into the town of Ferndale on June 20 with serious injuries and said another person who was with him had died.

HSI special agent in charge Robert Hammer said investigators have seen an ‘alarming rise’ in human smuggling attempts from Canada into Washington state in recent months.
