Development Initiatives (DI) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) were pleased to host an official side event on the margins of the 2022 ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment. The event consisted of presentations on the latest trends in global humanitarian assistance from UN OCHA and DI, followed by a discussion bringing together representatives from across the humanitarian community.

Humanitarian needs and the critical financial resources required to address them have reached a record high with more than $46 billion currently required to assist more than 200 million of the 300 million people in need.

While still dealing with the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, the humanitarian system must now sustain delivery in the face of sudden and significant new crises. From Ukraine to Ethiopia, the gap between needs and resources is growing with far-reaching consequences for everything from migration to food systems.

This event was moderated by Christina Bennett CEO at The Start Network and featured the following presentations:

Summary of the 2022 Global Humanitarian Overview report, UN OCHA
Preview of the 2022 GHA Report - humanitarian financing in the current global climate, Angus Urquhart (Crisis & Humanitarian Lead) DI
