Part of our Fall Get away 2022 is camping at the famous Dark Sky Preserve in Manitoulin Island.
The DarkSky Preserve at Manitoulin Eco Park is nestled in a hardwood forest, and visitors may choose to stay in large forest camping sites or right inside the Dark Sky Preserve.
The Preserve has a communal area in an open field that is great for stargazing and has 360-degree sky viewing.
Located in Tehkummah on Manitoulin Island, what is now Manitoulin Eco Park was Canada's first Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) designated commercial Dark Sky Preserve.
Located 13 minutes from the Chi-Cheemaun Ferry in South Baymouth.
35 minutes from the Little Current swing bridge (North island access).

Visitors can marvel at shimmering stars and constellations in vivid glow.
On the best nights, visitors get to see exceptional dark skies showing 7.5+ magnitude stars.
An aurora (plural: auroras or aurorae), also commonly known as the polar lights,[c] is a natural light display in Earth's sky, predominantly seen in high-latitude regions (around the Arctic and Antarctic). Auroras display dynamic patterns of brilliant lights that appear as curtains, rays, spirals, or dynamic flickers covering the entire sky.

Auroras are the result of disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by the solar wind. Major disturbances result from enhancements in the speed of the solar wind from coronal holes and coronal mass ejections. These disturbances alter the trajectories of charged particles in the magnetospheric plasma. These particles, mainly electrons and protons, precipitate into the upper atmosphere (thermosphere/exosphere). The resulting ionization and excitation of atmospheric constituents emit light of varying colour and complexity. The form of the aurora, occurring within bands around both polar regions, is also dependent on the amount of acceleration imparted to the precipitating particles.
