Everybody has been told about her: for its launch in 2019, the internet was filled with comments on how scandalous the farewell to rear-wheel drive was, and on her alleged bourgeoisie. The front and rear LEDs actually look more elegant and less aggressive, and the large double kidney frame in chrome also contributes to the idea of luxury. But the general line of the car, its proportions, but also the M set-up of the test version are removed from any doubts about the nature of the 1 Series: this car is not really bourgeois. And then thank you BMW, really. You have been able to keep the famous Hofmeister Kink on the rear pillar also on this C segment. the spoiler. Finally, the rims are 17 ”, and bode well for ride comfort on some Apulian roads. On the other hand, the overall dimensions are on average: 4.32 meters long by 1.80 meters wide and 1.43 meters high. Too bad for the trunk, which unlike its competitors has a capacity of 380 liters which, however, can grow up to 1,430 by knocking down the rear sofa in the 60:40 configuration: the surface becomes very flat and well usable, and the sofa is raised. courtesy light and 2 hooks for shopping bags. The driving set-up of the 1 Series is certainly sporty: you sit very low while not affecting the front visibility thanks to the not too wide pillars and the compact dimensions of the C segment with a fairly short nose, practical in maneuvers. The seats are incredibly enveloping, perhaps too much: they fit perfectly on me, but those who are slightly more corpulent may be a little tight. Aesthetically, the passenger compartment is eye-catching, with lots of black and contrasting M Sport blue details like the trim. The leather steering wheel is nice big and, I must say, rather chubby, with a beautiful aluminum frieze for the central race. The mixed analogue-digital instrumentation is clear, and we really appreciated the 8.8 "display of the infotainment system: it is complete, controllable both with the touch and with the rotor on the central tunnel, but has the right dimensions, not exaggerated, which does not distracting driving or blocking the view. An extra point for the physical keys of the dual-zone automatic climate, but get ready with the swiffer to continuously clean the beautiful gloss black of the central tunnel. Maybe you will turn up your nose, but in 2021 the pleasure of driving, like it or not, is accompanied by a bit of tech. Behind the steering wheel the choice between the analog-digital mix as on the example we tested, or the full digital instrumentation of the BMW Live Cockpit Plus. central tunnel: we advise you to use the latter, because you get used to using it after a few km, you avoid leaving the terrible fingerprints on the touch screen and above all you keep your hands closer to the wheel, without moving to the screen which in any case it is positioned high enough. In general, infotelematics includes navigator, internet connection and connectivity via Android and Apple. The pleasure of driving also passes through serenity, and here is that among the various airbags and tire pressure sensors we are assisted by Intelligent Safety: the ADAS package which includes adaptive cruise, anti-collision system, lane keeping and also the detection of the driver fatigue. Diesel and petrol engines are available: starting from the latter, the choice goes to the 110 or 136 HP 1.5 for the 116i and 118i. 2.0 178 bhp mounts the 120i, while the place of the peppered is occupied by the 128ti, 2.0 with 265 bhp, and the M135i with 306 bhp. 116, 118 and 120d are the names of the diesel variants: you can opt for a 115 bhp 1.5 or a 150 or 190 bhp 2.0 version. The 118d, protagonist of this test, develops 350 NM of torque, with lively performance and behavior: 0-100 in 8.4 seconds and a top speed of 215 km / h.
