As summer in China progresses into a traditionally hottest period of the year known as "Sanfu", high temperatures are reported in a number of cities across the country.

Shanghai, for instance, is seeing a clear sky with an extreme maximum temperature of 38-39℃ on Tuesday, July 16. Shanghai Central Meteorological Observatory has issued a yellow alert for high temperature.

Sanfu, also called China's "dog days of summer", refers to three roughly-10-day periods that are predicted to contain the hottest days of the year, and this year's dog days are predicted to last some 40 days.

In Qingdao, it is also very hot. A coast city with high humidity, Qingdao is experiencing an even higher perceived temperature than that reported by weather services, and it really feels like sauna, locals say.

The same goes for Shenyang, where many residents are heading to air-conditioned malls to enjoy the breeze.

Meanwhile, rainstorms are forecast to sweep through some provincial-level regions in China, prompting multiple alerts for possible flooding on Monday.

From Monday evening to Tuesday evening, downpours are expected to hit parts of Gansu, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Henan, Shandong, Anhui, Jiangsu, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Beijing and Hainan, according to China's national observatory’s orange alert for rainstorms.
