During the second world war US airmen who were based in the UK (fighting for our freedom), are typically associated with flash uniforms and a bulging wallet – they were over paid, over sexed and over here - the friendly invasion as it became known. But as we see in Masters of the Air, their accommodation was anything but flashy! These heroes, many of them volunteers to free Europe of tyranny were accommodated in mere sheds and shacks.

In this video I take you to the real accommodation used by men like Buck Cleven, Bucky Egan and Robert Rosie Rosenthal and it may surprise you just how basic the accommodation was.

Masters of Air is inspired by a book of the same name, Masters of the Air: America's Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany by biographer Don Miller.
