In this experiment we are going to extract chlorophyll from spinach leaves. We will crush the leaves in a mortar in presence of ethanol or ethyl alcohol. Also possible with isopropyl alcohol. Then, we will filter the liquid and get chlorophyll dissolved in alcohol. After that, with the help of ultraviolet light (blacklight tube) or an UV light LED torch we will see that chlorophyll is fluorescent. Chlorophyll when receives UV light emits red light.
