Which lightweight concrete mix should you use for your concrete project? Well, the answer might surprise you. For some projects, the best lightweight concrete mix design to use is not a lightweight concrete at all, but regular concrete mix with some modifications perhaps. In theory, lightweight concrete may sound like a viable alternative to regular, full weight concrete mix, but many times, it is not the best or the right answer.

You might think that you could make your concrete project much lighter by using a lightweight concrete aggregates such as vermiculite or perlite. Many times though, the correct mix to use is a full strength mix without a lot of excess, and one that is properly designed for your specific project.

Using lightweight aggregates in a concrete mix will also not save you any money. It will more than likely cost cost you much more than using a regular full-strength concrete mix. Often, you can achieve similar or better results using a modified regular strength concrete mix rather than a mix using lightweight concrete aggregates.
