I've had an ongoing issue with the pilot not staying lit in the water heater, with a tripped thermal protection device. First, I had to learn how to light the pilot a couple weeks ago, as it had never gone off up until then. It finally got Octember like, as I wanted a nice warm shower after a long day at work. No, no, I had to settle for cold.
I did some further digging, and learned about the filter grate that periodically needs to be cleaned out. What a pain, this is the first water heater installed here at the house, that's needed this service performed. I had to remove the burner assembly to vacuum out all the debris that had accumulated over the last nine years. After reassembly, soapy water was used to check for gas leaks, and found none. At last, nice warm showers are back! So far it's working perfectly.
