ften dentists don’t go straight to the full extent of the cavity prep because they are worried about making the prep huge.

It’s not your fault if the existing cavity is huge. You must prep it without mercy! If the remaining tooth has little structure, or the cavity is subgingival or it’s in the pulp, it’s not your fault.

You don’t put the caries there by prepping. It would be like a surgeon leaving some of the melanoma because they are sad at the size of the excision. Sure the surgery is smaller but the patient also died.

So where you see a shadow, prep straight to the outline of the cavity. Don’t start at the obvious cavitation and work your way out.
