While it seems that a handheld kitchen mixer might be a good tool for very small batches of concrete or mortar, it is definitely not the right tool for the job. A kitchen mixer does not have the amount of torque required for mixing a thick substance such as mortar or concrete. It is not to say that it cannot be done, but it will burn out the mixer motor quite fast. It is not advisable to use a kitchen mixer for a job like this.

A kitchen mixer, at low speeds, does not have the power or torque needed to mix concrete or cement mortar. At higher speeds, it has the torque needed, but it will also over aerate the mix as well as probably make a big mess. It is just not the right tool, even for small batches.

A great tool for mixing concrete or mortar in small batches is a power drill with a paddle attachment. A power drill has the power and torque required for this type of mixing, even at the lowest of speeds.

Small batches can easily be mixed by hand, especially with some good technique to make it easier. Depending on how small the batch is, you can use a small bucket and margin trowel, or a 5-gallon bucket and shovel or power drill with a paddle mixer. There are many good options for mixing small batches of concrete or mortar, but a kitchen mixer is not one of them.
