Lichtenstein Castle, also known as "Württemberg's Fairytale Castle", is a 19th-century castle built in Historicist style above the town of Honau in the Liechtenstein municipality in the Reutlingen district of Baden-Württemberg.
Den Castle was built around 1390, was destroyed during the Swabian City Wars in 1381, and was subsequently abandoned. Count Wilhelm von Württemberg built this neo-Gothic castle between 1840 and 1842 on the basis of the medieval Lichtenstein Castle. The building of the romantic wall was inspired by the novel "Lichtenstein" published in 1826 by the Stuttgart writer Wilhelm Hauf. Hauf is known for his fairy tales and legends, notably The Cold Heart and The Tale of Little Muck. Lichtenstein Castle was also the setting for the 2009 fairytale film Sleeping Beauty.
The interior of the building underlines the overall romantic impression of the castle. Among other things, you can visit the King's Room and the Heraldry Room, the Armory Hall with armor and medieval weapons, the Castle Chapel, the so-called Drinking Room with frescoes and a tiled stove, and the wood-panelled Knights' Hall decorated with paintings.
