Mad Men. It’s a show about the attractions of what’s on the surface. It’s fitting then, that one of its many stand-out successes is all about appearances. The production design of Mad Men immerses us in the 1960s more authentically than any show had done before, kickstarting a golden era of television. The devil is in the detail, with every seemingly insignificant design choice telling us something important about what’s going on under the shiny surface.
