In this video I show how to roughen up a machine cut surface using hand tools. I use a 900 gram lump hammer, a chrome vanadium point chisel and a carbide pitching chisel with a 1500 gram lump hammer. (I later found out that I still had a tungsten carbide point chisel, after which the carving went much faster).
This granite piece was part of a copy of a Japanese lantern, which I carved for the Japanese Garden in The Hague, The Netherlands.
I carved the rest of these parts by using angle grinders and air hammers, but for the surface of this base I needed that rough look that only hand tools can give. It looks so easy, but it turned out bloody hard work!
