What is the radiation risk to SpaceX/NASA astronauts? Today we are talking about how SpaceX, NASA and other space agencies plan to keep their astronauts safe from dangerous levels of radiation while travelling to the moon or even further to Mars. Now there are two main sources of radiation I’ll cover here, those being from the van Allen radiation belts around the Earth and the other more sparse but still dangerous solar radiation, solar flares from our sun as well as cosmic rays. No matter if we are talking SpaceX’s Starship or Apollo, this issue is the same. So how did NASA protect astronauts 50 years ago? What have we learned since the Apollo missions? And how are SpaceX and NASA going to protect astronauts in upcoming missions to the moon which could be coming up in only a few years?
