The show takes place in a fictional POW camp called Luft Stalag 13, located in Nazi Germany. Under the inept Colonel Wilhelm Klink, Colonel Robert E. Hogan and his band of American prisoners of war run a covert operation, where they help to sabotage German forces, as well as smuggle out other prisoners of war. Americans were immediately captivated by the hilarious and creative premise.

Of course, the real life events of World War II were grim and horrifying, and left millions of Jewish people murdered or traumatized. In order to ensure that such a sensitive topic was breached respectfully, all of the German soldiers were actually played by Jewish people. In fact, actor Robert Clary, who played Corporal Louis LeBeau, spent three years in a German concentration camp during World War II, and even lost his parents as well as other family members during the horrifying experience. The creators of the show knew that, while they wanted to make a comedic show surrounding the events of World War II, they would have to do their research to create a show that was still respectful and tasteful.

Before long, Hogan’s Heroes was a staple television show across the country as people tuned in to watch characters like Colonel Robert E. Hogan and Colonel Wilhelm Klink. Not only was the show popular among general audience members, but it also won critical acclaim. Throughout its run, Hogan’s Heroes was nominated for a total of 12 Emmy Awards, of which it won two.

Naturally, the show wouldn’t have been nearly as successful without its amazing cast members.
