The eighth episode in a unique series exploring all the major climate zones of the world that focuses in full high-definition video on real places in each climate zone. In this geography documentary we show this part of the world in its full beauty, and uncover the secrets of why it is that way and show you the influential lands and cities that lie within.

Found on every continent, this climate is home to the famous Atacama and Gobi deserts, as well as the iconic lands of the Western United States that gave birth to the Western fiction genre.

In North America, most of the inland western half of the USA is classed as a cool desert, including the states of Arizona, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington and Oregon. Within this area are the natural gems of the Grand Canyon and Arches and Zion National Parks.

In South America, the famous Atacama desert lies in the north of Chile and Western Bolivia, the driest place on earth, while further south, the endless parched plains of Patagonia in Argentina reach down almost to the Antarctic. Cool arid or semi arid conditions also occur in parts of South Africa, Australia and Spain.

Most of the world's cool deserts, however, lie within Southwest Asia and Central Asia - from Iran and Afghanistan in the south, and up through the Central Asian Republics of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan where we find the extensive Karakum desert and the now mostly dried out Aral Sea. The Taklamakan desert of Western China is the second largest expanse of sand dunes in the world, while the most famous cool desert of all - the Gobi of Mongolia that gave birth to the world's largest land empire of Genghis Khan - completes our map of cool Asian deserts.
