Welcome to our new session on casting processes.
Today’s topic is Shell Moulding. As we discussed in our previous video, sand casting is not suitable for components which require high dimensional accuracy and smooth surface finish. To overcome this, special casting processes are employed. One of such casting processes is Shell Moulding. In this video, we will talk about shell moulding, its process, advantages, disadvantages and applications.
Before that, you must be aware of the basic principles of special casting processes.

In 1944, a German engineer and entrepreneur named Johannes Croning developed a new process in his foundry which became known as the Croning process. This process of manufacturing parts with good dimensional accuracy and surface finish eventually became known as Shell Moulding or Shell-Mould Casting. Shell moulding is an expendable-mould casting process in which resin-covered sand is used to manufacture the mould. In this process, a shell-like moulding cavity is obtained, because of which this process came to be known as shell moulding
Using this process, mechanical parts with high dimensional accuracy and smooth surface finish can be obtained. When compared to sand casting, shell moulding has a higher productivity rate and lower labour cost. Are you wondering why? Well, to understand that, we will have to study the entire sand moulding process. Without any further ado, let’s get into it!
