Caution is something that a big brown trout has in spades. For a brown trout to get big he has to be cautious of predators, cautious of anglers, and cautious of anything else that may lead to his demise. Which is exactly why early fall is such a magical time of year.. because for one brief moment, that uncatchable fish is now willing to chase a streamer across the creek. For one brief moment that trout of your dreams is leaving his undercut bank to fight off other browns who have moved into his territory. For one brief moment… that brown trout is catchable. And if you’re willing to put in the time, you will get your moment.

I planned this entire trip around the pre spawn for brown trout. I knew that at some point in mid September the browns decide they want to start pushing upstream to spawn, which is just about the most perfect time to chase these giant browns. A few years back I was able to fish the first week in September and got on a few good fish, but I wanted to be smack dab in the middle of the migration this time. So I planned a trip for mid September hoping the stars would aline.

So here’s the thing, even if the fishing is amazing and the stars do aline, you can still have hours of fishing where it seems like the fish don’t exist. On this particular day, after starting off hot with 3 really good fish, we proceeded to spend the next 5 hours getting our but kicked, moving run after run, hole after hole, confused as to why the trout seemed to be completely nonexistent. That is until we finally found that perfect stretch of water.

Catching those two big browns back to back is something Andrew and I will be talking about for a long time. Rarely do you get an opportunity at one fish of that size, regardless of where you’re at in the US, let alone 2 within 30 minutes of each other. We did end up fishing a bit longer just to see if our luck would continue, but it didn’t. Not only that but if you’ve ever fished Colorado you know that the amount of people fishing in September is insane, and rather than fight the crowds we decided to try something a little different to end off our first day chasing big fish.

And just like that our day was over! Part 2 will be out sometime next week, so don't miss it!
