On October 4, 2017, Operational Detachment Alpha Team 3212, part of the 3rd Special Forces Group, found themselves in a situation that quickly escalated beyond the realm of their initial mission. Under the leadership of Captain Michael Perozeni, the team, which included Staff Sergeant Bryan Black, Staff Sergeant Jeremiah Johnson, and Sergeant La David Johnson, embarked on what was initially a C/K mission.

Upon arrival, their target was nowhere to be found. Captain Perozeni instead verbally engaged with the village elders. Shortly, after the team would drive right into a coordinated attack. The insurgents, numbering around fifty, attacked from multiple directions with small arms fire.

Staff Sergeant Bryan Black, a skilled communicator and intelligence specialist, immediately relayed the situation back to headquarters. He called for air support and reinforcements, knowing that the team was significantly outnumbered and outgunned.

Staff Sergeant Jeremiah Johnson, known for his tactical acumen, quickly organized a defensive perimeter. He directed his team to take cover and return fire, their rifles cracking in response to the insurgent onslaught. The team’s position was perilous; they were in open terrain with little cover, a tactical disadvantage against the concealed insurgents.

Sergeant La David Johnson, took up a position to provide covering fire. His actions were crucial in allowing his teammates to maneuver and establish a more defensible position.

As the situation grew more dire, Captain Perozeni made the difficult decision to attempt a break for safety. Coordinating with Nigerien forces, the team executed a fighting withdrawal. This maneuver required precise timing and coordination under intense enemy fire. Despite their best efforts, Staff Sergeant Bryan Black, Staff Sergeant Jeremiah Johnson, and Sergeant La David Johnson were mortally wounded during the engagement. Their sacrifice allowed the remaining members of the team to escape and regroup with reinforcing elements.

In memory of the fallen.
