Hey there my fellow acrylic pour artists! If you’ve ever wondered how to clean the silicone oil off the surface of your paintings before varnishing, this is the video for you!

Oil of any kind on the surface of a painting can affect the adhesion of varnish or resin (resin even more so than varnish!) so it’s very important to get that oil off, whether it be silicone oil or even fingerprints!

After your painting has fully dried (1-2 weeks for craft paint and floetrol, or 3-4 weeks for a bloom pour or a painting using high quality paints or a thick pouring medium), you can clean it.

Step 1: Put some cornstarch on your painting. Use a soft brush such as a makeup brush to spread it around and work it into all the nooks and crannies of the painting to fully absorb all the oil! Don’t forget to clean the painting edges as well.

Step 2: Brush off ALL the cornstarch and wipe off your surface.

Note: If you used a very oily technique such as chameleon cells, you may need to repeat steps 1 and 2.

Step 3: Put one drop of dish soap on a paper towel and moisten it until it is damp and makes a small amount of soap foam when you squeeze it. Wipe your canvas thoroughly to remove all traces of oil and cornstarch.

Step 4: Allow painting to dry for another 2-3 days before varnishing, if possible.
