Words from Liz:

This song is inspired by Genesis 16, where Hagar, after being mistreated by her mistress Sarah, has fled into the desert. There, an angel of the Lord finds her, and instructs her to return to Sarai and submit to her. He also tells her she is pregnant with a son that she is to name Ishmael (which interestingly means “God hears”). This is Hagar’s response in verse 13: “She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”

This song was pretty much a miracle. I came home early from work one day, not feeling very well, and suddenly felt pressed to write. Over the course of about an hour God brought the the lyrics and words to my mind. I can’t express enough how songwriting does not come naturally to me, so there is no doubt at all that this came straight from God Himself. This song came during a challenging season of life. I was struggling with trusting God for the direction my life was going. There was a lot of insecurity and frustration, and a lack of trust in God’s plan for me. Not gonna lie, there was definitely a lot of fleshly thoughts going on…But then I read this portion and was struck with how personal our God is. As David writes in Psalm 139: “You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.” What a comforting thought to think that God knows everything there is to know about us - our best moments and our worst, our deepest struggles and our greatest desires. Everything there is to know, He knows. Our God sees us, and He also loves us despite it all. So we can trust that He has His best in store for each of us, according to His perfect will. I needed this reminder desperately in my life during that time, and to be honest I still need it frequently. I pray that this song can be a reminder for you, as it has been for me, to draw near to and be comforted by the God who sees!
