Abe no Oji Shrine, or Abe Ōji Jinja in Japanese, is a Shinto shrine located in Abeno Ward, Osaka City, Japan. The shrine was once known as Abe no Ōji and was one of the 99 shrines of Kumano, a branch of the Kumano Shrine.

The main deities of the shrine are Izanagi-no-Mikoto, Izanami-no-Mikoto, and Hayasusa-no-Mikoto, who are collectively known as the Kumano Ōji gods. Emperor Ōjin, also known as Hachiman Daibosatsu, was enshrined here later.

According to the “Sesshu Tojo Abe Gongen Engi” scroll, Emperor Nintoku had a dream in which a three-legged crow, a messenger of the Kumano Sanzan, appeared. When he searched for it, he found the same crow on Abe Island (which was an island at that time), and so he established a shrine in this location.

The shrine is also associated with the Abe clan, a powerful family from ancient times who lived in this region, Abeno. The Abe clan had a temple, Abe Temple, and a shrine, Abe Shrine (now Abe Ōji Shrine), from the Nara period.

During the Heian period, the Abe clan lost its power, and the Abe Temple was incorporated into Shitennoji Temple. However, with the popularity of Kumano faith during the Heian period, many shrines were built along the Kumano Kodo, and Abe Ōji Shrine became one of them.

Today, the shrine is known for its benefits in warding off evil, bringing good luck, preventing disasters, and healing illnesses. It is also popular for its omikuji (fortune-telling paper strips) featuring the Yatagarasu, a three-legged crow, which is considered a symbol of guidance and good fortune.

In addition to the main shrine, there are several sub-shrines within the precincts, including Kuzunoha Inari Shrine, which enshrines Kuzunoha, the mother of Abe no Seimei, who is known as the founder of Onmyodo (the way of Yin and Yang) in Japan.

The shrine is easily accessible, located just a 3-minute walk from Higashi-Tengachaya Station on the Hankai Tramway Uemachi Line. It’s also a 12-15 minute walk from Showacho Station on the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line. If you’re driving, there’s a small parking lot available for visitors.
