- *1/2 kg Nethili Fish* (Anchovies)
- *2 Big Onions*
- *15 Small Onions*
- *4 Tomatoes*
- *1 Small Coconut* (for coconut milk)
- *Red Chilli Powder* (3 teaspoons)
- *Turmeric Powder* (1 teaspoon)
- *Salt* (to taste)
- *Tamarind Juice* (from a lemon-sized tamarind ball)
- *Oil* (5 teaspoons)
- *Anise (Sombu)* (a pinch)
- *Fenugreek Seeds (Vendhayam)* (a pinch)
- *Curry Leaves* (a handful)
- *2 Additional Tomatoes*
- *Fish Curry Masala* (as per your preference)
*Instructions:*
1. *Prepare the Coconut Milk:*
- Grate the coconut and extract the milk. Set aside.
2. *Grind the Base Masala:*
- Blend 2 tomatoes and 2 onions together to form a smooth paste.
3. *Cook the Base:*
- Heat oil in a pan. Add a pinch of anise and fenugreek seeds. Sauté for a minute.
- Add the 15 small onions and curry leaves. Cook until the onions are golden brown.
4. *Add Tomatoes and Spices:*
- Chop and add 2 tomatoes. Cook until they soften.
- Stir in the ground tomato-onion paste.
- Add red chilli powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well.
5. *Incorporate Coconut Milk:*
- Pour in the extracted coconut milk and tamarind juice. Mix thoroughly.
6. *Add the Masala:*
- Add your preferred fish curry masala. Stir well and let it cook for 20 minutes to blend the flavors.
7. *Cook the Fish:*
- Gently add the Nethili fish to the curry. Simmer for 10 minutes or until the fish is cooked through.
8. *Final Touch:*
- Adjust seasoning if needed. Garnish with fresh curry leaves.
