0:00 - Introduction
Hello everyone! In our pregnancy and hernia series, let us see another common question which we encounter. We have patients who walk in and then ask sir I am planning to get pregnant as of now I am completely fine, but I am very scared that if I get pregnant I will develop a hernia.

0:19 - Does Pregnancy Cause Hernia?

Is it true? Is pregnancy a cause for forming hernia in a healthy person? The answer is pregnancy is not a very common risk factor for forming a hernia. Of course pregnancy causes stretch of the abdomen. When abdomen stretches there can be some weakening of the muscles, but majority of times normal healthy person does not develop a hernia following a normal pregnancy. But there are certain scenarios where pregnancy can act to the risk of hernia formation.

0:50 - Special Scenarios when Pregnancy causes Hernia

What are these scenarios? Let us see them. When the patient already has an existing small hernia especially a belly button hernia. It is a very small defect which the patient does not notice and if the lady gets pregnant pregnancy can become a stretch increase the size of the defect or the hole. And hernia can appear during or after the pregnancy

When the patient has previous abdomen surgery like a scar of an appendix operation or a scar of a previous Cesarean. These are potential weak spots where future pregnancies can cause a hernia to form because of the stretch of the scar and small rupture of the scar. This is especially true when the baby size is large or if the lady has twin pregnancies. But does it mean that all patients with the previous scar of an appendix or a Cesarean operation will definitely develop a hernia following pregnancy? No it is also very less common.

1:57 - How to Prevent Hernia during Pregnancy

So if the lady is really worried that she may develop a hernia following pregnancy and she wants to avoid that is there a way where she can decrease the chance of hernia formation? Of course, yes. How do we do that?

Prior to getting pregnancy a good muscle tone is always useful because it can withstand the stretch of the pregnancy. So good exercise and having a good abdominal wall tone prior to pregnancy is definitely beneficial for a safe pregnancy and decreasing a chance of a hernia formation.A good high protein diet starting from prior to planning of pregnancy will increase the quality of the muscle and also the quality of the scar tissue if the patient had a previous surgery like an appendix or a Cesarean scar.

Avoiding smoking can decrease the risk of hernia. Avoiding obesity if the patient is obese prior to the pregnancy that abdominal fat itself will cause a lot of stretch and strain on the abdominal wall. Adding to that the stretch of the pregnancy will double the stretch and that can lead to weakening of the scar of a previous surgery or even cause new hernias in a patient who is getting pregnant. So avoiding obesity prior to pregnancy will definitely help to decrease the chance of developing a hernia following a pregnancy.

3:22 - Conclusion

So if one takes all these precautions we can decrease the chance of hernia formation following a pregnancy. As such pregnancy in a normal healthy lady is not a risk factor for formation of hernia and one should not be worried about a hernia being formed after getting pregnant and that should not affect the decision to get pregnant.
