Singhik,5,120 feet above sea level, the gateway to North Sikkim is a quaint village, only 4 km from Mangan along the North Sikkim Highway which leads to Chungthang and further to Lachung and Lachen.


I got a chance to attend a Lepcha marriage in Singhik near Mangan. And we are from Groom’s side. Lepchas are one of the ancient tribes in Sikkim. Marriage rituals are as simple as they are. The date was fixed by the Lama and all the rituals were conducted at the house of the bride.

During the whole marriage you can hear a single word that is AAchuley means Let’s go to the Himalayas.


In this video, I have given detailed information about the marriage. The main rituals are :

1. Arrival of the Groom with family members at the bride's house with some gifts.
2. The family members of the bride welcome them by serving a local fermented drink called Tongba.
3. Main rituals are conducted by the local priest called Boongthing.
4. Rituals are also conducted by the Lama.
5. Reception Party where all the village people come and give blessings to the newly married couple.
