Thirty years ago, while prefishing for the 1992 GM Pro Bass Classic, I met Barry and Len Graves. They were fun fishing out of a small aluminum boat and staying at Sunrise Tent and Trailer Camp in Bewdley, Ontario on the shores of Rice Lake. Barry was too shy to come and meet me and really wanted to check out my bass boat. Len introduced himself and brought Barry over who was 13 years old at the time. I gave him some lures, showed him my bass boat, and invited him and Len to the weigh in. Barry predicted I would weigh in 15 pounds and I did the first day 😊. They came back to the day 2 weigh in where Barry predicted 18 pounds, and I weighed 20.70. At that point I insisted they come to the final day 3 weigh in. Barry predicted 21 pounds and I weighed in 12 and change, the reverse of Barry’s predicted numbers and secured the title of GM Pro Bass Classic Champion winning a Chevy Blazer 4x4 and a Ranger 482V Comanche with a 150 Mariner. We celebrated the victory together with a supper out and have become lifelong friends!

Fast forward thirty years later, Barry and I won this year’s Canada US Walleye Tournament on Sturgeon Lake. While celebrating wth a victory drink after the tournament, Barry asked me if I would like to join him, Len, and Barry’s boys, Allan 13, and Hunter 11 on a trip to Lady Evelyn Lake up near New Liskeard, Ontario. I accepted the invitation! No bass boats, high tech equipment, just a simple Northern Ontario excursion using rented aluminum boats. This trip would be reminiscent of the time 30 years earlier that Barry and Len and I met while they were fishing out of a small aluminum boat.

Barry is now a very successful Canadian Tournament angler and I do a very limited amount of tournaments these days. Come join us as we leave our bass boats at home and explore a new northern lake. We are targeting walleye and pike with some Smallmouth bass thrown in as well. We travel to Red Pine Lodge on Lady Evelyn Lake. Join us we attempt to dial in the walleye, pike, and bass using basic electronics as we fish out of rented aluminum boats. It’s a memorable trip with Len, Barry, Allan, and Hunter Graves. We spent two half days and two full days at Red Pine Lodge. Let’s take a look at our adventure which highlights the fishing as well as the trip to and from the lodge including the ascent and descent form the Mowat’s Landing Access Point.

Using the lodge boat’s Humminbird Piranha and my Humminbird Helix 5 portable powered by an Amped Outdoors 30AH was a great one two combination to give both sonar and gps capabilities.
