The destruction of Warsaw was a great tragedy. But to the architect community right after the war, this event also seemed like a great opportunity. On February 14, 1945, the Capital Reconstruction Office was formally established, which was to deal with raising the city from ruins. In 1980, UNESCO entered Warsaw's Old Town on the World Heritage List. For the first time, a complete reconstruction was honored in this way. The post-war reconstruction of Warsaw was the first attempt in the history of the world to reconstruct the entire historical core of the city, and not only its most valuable monuments. See the reconstruction of Warsaw in archival photographs from 1945 - 1959.
