Have you ever thought of studying Hotel management in Canada?

In this video, I, Siddharth Sirohi will discuss with my friends who are recent graduates from Hotel Management, Hospitality management and Culinary arts field. We will discuss the required education background you need to pursue Hospitality management in Canada. I will share the journey of my friend i.e., Devansh, Shreyansh & Amber. Devansh is working as a Chef at Western Hotels by Marriot in Whistler. Whereas, Shreyansh is working as a Front desk manager/ Guest service manager at Sandman hotel and Amber is working as an Assitant front desk manager at Coast Capri hotel at Kelowna. In this video, we will mostly cover what options you have in hotel management in Canada? What is the scope of hospitality management or culinary arts in Canada? How to grab part-time jobs or full time jobs in core field in Canada? Tips for students coming in Hospitality management course in Canada? Average pay or salaries in Hotel industry? Chefs vs Front Desk vs House keeping department?

First, will discuss how and why people move from India to Canada with hotel industry experience. In India, the pay is low initially so that’s the main reason why people from hotel industry move abroad after 1-2 years of experience. In our group, Amber and Shreyansh had two years of work experience in India whereas Devansh had 6 months to 1 year experience in hotel industry. While applying for hospitality management course, the most popular options they had were:

Selkirk College – Culinary Science, Hospitality Management – 2 years – Fees $30,000 Cad approx..
George Brown College Diploma in Culinary Management – Bachelors, Fees – 28600 cad approx..
Humber College - Diploma in Hospitality – Hotel & Restaurant Management – 2 years, Fees – 33,606 cad approx..
Niagara College – Diploma in Hospitality - Hotel and Management Operations + Coop – Bachelors – Fees $30,000 Cad approx..
Conestoga College – Hospitality Diploma in Operations Leadership in Food manufacturing - $15383 cad approx..
Cambrian College – Diploma in Hospitality – Hotel & Restaurant Management – Fees $30,000 approx.
Centennial College – Diploma in Culinary Management, 2 years, Fees – 30,547 Cad approx..
St. Clair College - Diploma in Hospitality – Hotel & Restaurant Management.

Although, my friends decided to join Selkirk College for Hospitality Management due to small population size in Nelson, good college reputation in British Columbia. After completing their Culinary management course, they has college placement interview from different hotels like Delta by Marriot, Western Hotels, Sandman Hotels, etc. It was easy to grab a job in hotel management provided you have good skills and positive mindset to work and adjust in any environment.

If we talk about the average pay or salary, then a fresher can expect to start a job as either a chef or a front desk representative starting at $18-21 per hour + tips. That comes out to be closer to $40-50,000 cad Annual. However, if you have some experience in hotel industry then you can expect around $24-27 per hours + tips which turns out to be closer to $60,000 annual salary. When working as a chef, you also gets tips from the customer that could range from $5-7 per hour and this is only for kitchen and house keeping department. In contrast, when you are working as a Front desk representative, then you do not receive any tips. If we talk about some general tips for students coming for hospitality or Culinary management course in Canada, then it is must to learn a skills from India and then move here. That particular skill could be cooking, wielding, hair cutting, good sales skills, etc., as these skills will help you easily find a part-time job and later your core full-time job in Canada
