The BMW M5 knows when it's onto a good thing. Case in point: the new seventh-generation model keeps its predecessor's formidable 4.4-litre twin-turbo petrol V8 engine. That said, the bent eight now forms part of a plug-in hybrid system (PHEV) that also includes an electric motor. This combination delivers staggering combined outputs of 535kW of power and 1000Nm of torque.

Better yet, the 2025 BMW M5's 18.6kWh delivers 67km of electric-only driving range, so it's versatile enough to help you save some serious fuel – if that's your thing in a sports sedan. Either way, the new BMW M high-performance flagship has the Mercedes-AMG E63 S and Audi RS7 Sportback firmly in its proverbial sights.

In this news video, CarsGuide Journalist Chris Thompson gets up close and personal with the new M5 as part of a walk-around preview, detailing its exterior and interior designs and everything else its lucky buyers can expect ahead of its release date.
