October 22nd, 1836 General Sam Houston was sworn in as the first president of Texas. He was the hero of Texas. He was elected president of the new Texas Republic on September 5, 1836, and then as U.S. Senator after the area was annexed by the United States. In 1835, Texans formed a provisional government, which issued a declaration of independence from Mexico the following year. At that time, Houston was appointed military commander of the Texas army.
