Previously, the remote trek to Makalu Base Camp has only been possible as a camping trip. However, earlier this year, Operations manager, Niki visited Nepal to see how the journey would work staying exclusively in tea houses. Everything went smoothly both on trek and in the tea houses. Niki described it as quite simply one of the most spectacular and rewarding experiences in the world. With the comfort of knowing she was coming back to a warm cup of tea and a bed at the end of a strenuous day trekking the adventure was even more enjoyable.

The entire trek was a fulfilling experience but Niki’s personal highlight was the day when they crossed four high passes, including the Shipton La, a huge mountaineering challenge with fantastic scenic rewards. Reaching the base camp was another unforgettable moment as she recalls the immense sense of achievement of standing directly in front of the spectacular view of Makalu.

Reflecting on her time in Nepal, Niki recommends this trip to the keen, adventurous trekker looking for a tough but rewarding trek.
