Alfred Rosenberg, Hitler's artistic advisor, headed a service specially created for the occasion, the ERR. His mission was to coordinate the thousands of lootings perpetrated in Europe and then to transport the loot to Berlin. The masterpieces were sent to the offices and homes of high-ranking leaders while the rest were stored in different locations.

At the end of the war, despite the diligence of organizations dedicated to their restitution, tens of thousands of works disappeared. Over the decades, some of them have resurfaced in the public space, giving rise to paternity battles.
