How to use a Ferro Rod to light a fire like an Expert. Pro Tips for the Beginner that will drastically improve your fire lighting skills. This technique will give you near 100% fire lighting success with scavenged wet or dry branches.

If you use a Ferro Rod, flint and steel, matches or bow drill to light your camp fires, this simple tinder making technique is really going to speed up your fire building time. If you're a survivalist, this tinder scraping technique is a simple but important one to know.

Can you scrape tinder from freshly cut, green material and light a fire with it in under 3 minutes? With a cardscraper edge, YES YOU CAN!
With a cardscraper edge on the back of a machete, you can quickly scrape up big piles of fluffy, ribbon like tinder. The tinder is so wispy thin, it dries out rapidly and takes a spark easily.

How easy is it to sharpen and maintain a Cardscraper Edge?
It's about the easiest edge to master! Just a flat chainsaw file (they have safe, rounded edges) and a small pocket stone is all you need. You can also use the same two tools to sharpen and maintain your machete out in the field.

If you're really new to cardscraper edges, the following YouTube clip is for you. It will show you everything from scratch and it's beginner friendly.

EXTRA TIPS FOR THE READERS ~ This technique works better with harder, wet or dry timber & Bamboo. This scraping technique does not work well with Fatwood as it's too sticky. You don't need to scrape it so fine for a fire anyway. Larger Fatwood shaving strike easy due to the high volatile oil content.
