Listen, we love all of our guests equally. But some episodes, for one reason or another, are just extra special. And this is one of those!

On this week's episode, we welcome the inimitable Matt Risby. Our first international guest and a true devotee of TOGT11, which is just so rad. Matt is a man of many talents, though he may not care to admit it, and his primary current endeavor is an excellent visual podcast focused on indie tabletop RPGs played solo or in small groups called The Bad Spot. It rules, you must check it out.

Matt brought with him a devastatingly effective case for the perfection of “Blue Lines” by those grand daddies of the legendary Bristol, UK music scene: Massive Attack. A band that is inarguably underrated on this side of the pond, Massive Attack’s debut represented the synthesis of and expansion upon the band members’ work with the Wild Bunch, an influential “sound system” to come out of the club scene in 80’s Bristol. It’s gritty, it’s challenging, and it’s undeniably life-affirming. Nothing else sounds quite like it, truly.

And, my goodness, does Matt ever spin a yarn. He breaks down the path his agreeing to be a guest on the pod took him down; the reflection on his relationship with music and how it has evolved in his adulthood. He contextualizes, he cites his sources, he comes in with the big swings. It ended up being a long episode but there was just too much gold to cut much of anything! We have no doubt it’s worth it.

We hope you enjoy experiencing this one as much as we enjoyed making it. But there’s only one way to find out if Matt’s case is really all I’m cracking it up to be, to know if he does enough to win inclusion in the TOGT11 pantheon for “Blue Lines”. Won’t you join us?
