► SCRIPT:
ow, the flare scratch is a lot more technical than the other scratches I taught so far. You’ll need to be proficient with your fader hand and platter hand to get this scratch right. But believe me, learning this scratch is worth it
Because this scratch produces the most sounds with minimal movement. So if you wanna sound like your scratching fast, then this scratch is for you.
The basis of the flare scratch is to make one sound, sound like 4. Imagine it like this:
If this is your sample, we’re going to slice it into 4, with 2 movements. And what makes these 4 sounds different is the pitch your applying to it when you move the sample.
So let’s load our scratch sample into our deck.
Now the first thing we have to do is know the movement we’re going to make. Let’s start with the platter hand.
The movement here is simple. Just push and pull the platter like this.
The trick to this scratch is with the crossfader, so the movements on the crossfader look like this.
So now that we know these movements, let’s start with the steps.
First position your Hand on the crossfader and keep the crossfader in the on position, and place your platter hand on the platter
Then move your platter forward for a bit, then bring the crossfader to the off position then back to the on position, and move the platter all the way till we hear the end of the sample.
Then pull the platter for a bit, then again, bring the crossfader to the off position then back to the on position, and this time pull the plater all the way back from where you started.
When you practice this scratch start very slowly, and build up your speed. Remember that we have to build up your muscle memory for this scratch so starting slow and clean is best.
