Beyond all the spectacle and violence, there is tragedy.

And so it is in this story, as we meet our protagonists: Poppy, a bubbly 12 year-old Merchant girl whose life is turned upside down at the reaping, and Warren, an 18 year-old Seam boy who is struggling to provide for his mother and younger sister. The two become close friends during their time in the Capitol, but as their life is hanging by a thread, they have to face their inevitable fate.

Meanwhile, the careers have their own share of struggles too. Seymour, the fierce leader of the career pack, is clashing with the stubborn and unruly Jewel, who does not wish to conform to the expectations that come with being a career.

Between all the alliances forming and breaking, unlikely bonds arise, one of which ends up changing the entire course of the Games. Because even in a life and death situation where everyone is a potential enemy, one cannot completely avoid human connection.

This story does not celebrate the victor, but instead it commemorates the fallen. Because, in the end, there are no winners, only survivors.
