Hi everyone, this is John from Zoom and in this video, we’ll go over the benefits of using the iQ7 stereo microphone with your iOS device for better quality mobile recordings.

The iQ7 has two microphone elements: one is a directional "mid" mic that captures signal coming directly from the front of your iOS device. The other is a bi-directional "side" mic that captures audio coming from the left and right sides. Mid-side is an advanced recording technique that allows the width of the stereo image to be varied to create a wide stereo field, or a narrow, targeted sound, even in post-production. This gives a whole new level of precision in your ability to shape sound.

A three-way switch allows you to select between 90 degrees and 120 degrees, depending on your desired stereo width. Choosing 90 degrees allows the iQ7 to focus on sounds coming from the center, while choosing 120 degrees allows you to capture a wider image that includes more room sound and ambience. A third setting, labeled "M-S," lets you record "raw" audio and adjust its stereo width or image using your audio software. This setting is available when using the Zoom Handy Recorder app. Lastly, the iQ7 has a rotatable capsule which will allow for the correct microphone orientation depending on if you are recording audio, or video.

Let’s compare recordings from the built-in mono iOS microphone and the stereo iQ7 in the 90 degree setting. We will start with the iOS microphone.

In comparison to the iOS microphone, the iQ7 records audio that’s fuller and clearer than the iOS microphone itself. Notice that you also get a stereo width from the addition of the iQ7’s bi-directional side mic that cannot be achieved using the mono iOS mic.
