Alexanderplatz in East Berlin is bustling with activity. GDR citizens take advantage of the shopping opportunities offered by the Centrum department stores', marvel at the height of the Hotel Stadt Berlin and walk along the Press Café to the Press Building. Not far from the TV tower, the Haus des Lehrers, Haus des Reisens and Haus der Elektronik form a high-rise ensemble with the Congress Hall that stands for the modernity and growth aspirations of GDR architecture. In contrast to the old buildings along Schönhauser Allee, huge residential districts full of new buildings are being built in Berlin Marzahn. At the Alex, the world clock also promises new beginnings and internationality. Many passers-by dream of travelling to the far, unreachable world while looking at the 146 places marked on the clock.
