Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences and our Science and Entertainment Exchange have participated in the DC Environmental Film Festival for over a decade. On March 24, 2024 we hosted a screening of the film Canary that focused on the extraordinary life of explorer, scientist, and member of the NAS Lonnie Thompson. Dr. Thompson’s personal journey is an inspiration. Overcoming health issues including a heart transplant, he has traversed glaciers around the globe to gather data to help us better understand the devastating impact of climate change.

This video is the post-screening conversation with Lonnie Thompson, his wife NAS member Ellen Mosely-Thompson, their daughter Regina Thompson, and co-directors Alex Rivest and Danny O’Malley. The conversation was moderated by April Melvin who is part of the Climate Crossroads project of National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, Medicine.
